“I make a mark which demands something else in relation to it. A color comes to mind. Then come questions. Should the mark occupy more or less space? Is it a container or the contained? After much time something— that I couldn’t have predicted at the outset— emerges, surprising me. If I sense it is good, I’m careful to stop. I come back the next day and if it strikes me as having “life” on day two, that may well be the end. Sometimes a week later, after hanging out together in the studio, I notice it’s not holding a spark anymore. I go back in the painting; a new line, a bit of color, shape augmented. It can, and often does, become something entirely different.”
